Empower the Under-represented
I had a call with an acquaintance last week who helped me realize that my vision is to impact the under-represented. I’ve always known that I wanted to “help people” (#yawn), but it wasn’t until last week that it clicked: I want to inspire the UNDER-REPRESENTED. These are the people who are struggling to advocate for themselves and those who lack advocacy from others. These are the people I so deeply feel for and relate to, and these are the people I intend to empower with all my might.
We have all of these foundations, associations, and organizations that aim to help certain populations. They’re AMAZING. They’re influential, they’re goal-oriented, and they’re driven to make a difference. What I admittedly don’t really know is, are they having an effect at the individual level? For example, does a person with Parkinson’s become a self-advocate as a result of these groups’ efforts? I’m honestly not sure. Do these people with Parkinson’s have access to or even awareness of these types of groups? Again, I don’t know. In my experience, I’ve noticed through my work as a Speech-Language Pathologist, that the under-represented may not have the access or awareness that we want them to, including the education they deserve.
So…my intention, you ask? I desire to EMPOWER others, period, but especially those whose voices and messages appear to be unrecognized due to lack of self-advocacy or appointed advocates. People deserve to be heard and to share their experiences and their life lessons. I believe we empower through listening and educating. That is my mission.
The under-represented have a voice, a message, a truth that they must share. Create your legacy in this world by EMPOWERING them: those who need their voices heard, their messages listened to, and their truths recognized. EMPOWER. Let’s empower together.
